What We Do and Why We Do It

The California Forward Action Fund works with our sister organization, California Forward, to identify reforms that can allow our state to fundamentally change how public dollars are spent, and give Californians better tools to hold politicians accountable. Ultimately, our goal is to help improve the quality of life for all Californians by creating more responsive, representative, and cost-effective government.

In 2008, we worked with a broad array of organizations on a bipartisan basis to put voters in charge of how political districts are drawn, and end the unavoidable conflict of interest present when legislators decide their own electoral district boundaries. As a result of the passage of Prop. 11, starting in 2011 Legislators will no longer be able to cherry pick voters or carve out of their districts communities they don’t want -- districts will be drawn by voters, for voters. More can be done to improve our electoral system, but Prop 11 was an important step and showed Californians can change the system.

In 2010, we are working with other organizations, again on a bipartisan basis, to overhaul the state’s budget process. We also want to start giving local governments the freedom to pursue policies that promote vibrant, healthy communities and restore California’s position as a world economic and innovation leader. Currently, we are building a statewide coalition of partners in support of our 2010 Reform Plan, which we hope to qualify for the 2010 ballot for voters to consider next November.

What about 2012? Our sister organization, California Forward, is organizing a statewide discussion that will take place through 2010 and early 2011 around how Californians in communities throughout the state can bring government closer to the people to allow towns, cities and regions to address problems and plan for the future in ways that make sense close to home. We expect these discussions to cover other issues a well, and the results will form the basis for one or more ballot measures on the 2012 ballot. We hope you’ll join us for that discussion and share your expertise and ideas. Click here to Get Involved.

It’s very clear that we’re held hostage by the extremes of both, the far right and the far left and there is no compromise there.
